Lymphatic Drainage

Rotary technique

Used on flat skin regions such as the chest wall. As pressure is applied smoothly, the thumb abducts fully to contact the second finger without dragging the skin.

Pump technique

Used on curved surfaces such as legs and arms. With the wrist extended, the palm comes into full contact with the skin and the pressure phase stretches the skin in the direction of the desired drainage.

Stationary circle technique

Used on all areas of the body. The skin is moved with a push-pressure motion towards the tips of the fingers and the circle is finished in the direction of lymph flow.

Scoop technique

Used on all areas of the body. The skin is moved with a push-pressure motion towards the tips of the fingers and the circle is finished in the direction of lymph flow.

What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Your lymph system is a network of vessels that acts as a catch-all for getting fluid back into the bloodstream. The lymph fluid runs along the network, collecting fluid that seeps from cells, tissues, and organs, absorbing fat and proteins from your gut, and removing waste and abnormal cells. The fluid is filtered through your spleen, lymph nodes, and lymph ducts. If disrupted by injury or surgery, the lymph system can back up like the drain of a sink, and this can cause painful swelling or lumps known as fibrosis.

How Does Lymphatic Drainage Work?

During a surgical procedure, lymph vessels can be damaged, or the flow of lymph can be interrupted, causing further swelling and potentially leading to lymphedema. This is especially noticeable after surgeries like liposuctions, breast augmentation or mastectomy, or other types of surgery. Lymphatic drainage is key to reducing swelling and preventing lymphedema. Lymphatic drainage massage by a certified therapist is a painless way to restore the flow of lymph and speed up recovery time. Manual lymphatic drainage can also provide relief for people who experience swelling in the feet and legs from a sedentary lifestyle. Learn more about lymphatic drainage massage here.
